In the wake of recent cult-related killings across Jattu and Auchi communities in Etsako West Local Government Area, Edo State, the Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) of Jattu and Auchi have announced a robust crackdown on cultism and associated crimes.
CSP Otoagua Joseph of Jattu Division and CSP Esezoboh Paul of Auchi Division revealed that several suspects have already been apprehended and handed over to the Anti-Cultism Unit in Benin, where they will be charged to court in the coming days.
The DPOs stated that the police have launched a comprehensive anti-cultism campaign, engaging with communities and advising youths to steer clear of cult groups. “Black spots, drinking joints, and hotel premises across the divisions have been raided in recent days as part of a broader security operation. We assure residents that stop-and-search exercises and intensive patrols will continue until peace is fully restored,” CSP Otoagua Joseph said.
In a stern warning, the DPOs urged all cultists within their jurisdictions to vacate immediately, making it clear that any person caught will face the full weight of the law. The police also warned that individuals found in possession of hard drugs would not be spared, as such substances often fuel violent crimes.
Responding to concerns about potential extortion and the targeting of innocents during raids, the Jattu DPO reassured the public that thorough profiling is conducted, and only those found culpable are transferred for prosecution. “Innocent individuals have been released unconditionally, and only those proven guilty are held for court proceedings,” he said.
The DPOs reaffirmed their commitment to restoring peace across Jattu and Auchi, underscoring a zero-tolerance approach in their ongoing campaign to eradicate cultism and protect law-abiding citizens across the area.
