The Edo State Police Command has blown the lid off a criminal ring operating within its own ranks, arresting a serving officer and three civilians accused of brutalising and robbing innocent citizens in Benin City.

The dramatic takedown followed a viral video in which a victim accused policemen of abducting him, seizing his phone and valuables, and intimidating him into silence. Outraged by the revelations, Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, ordered an immediate crackdown that led to the arrest of the suspects on 15 August.

According to Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Joel Yamu, the suspects were intercepted by the Ugbowo Surveillance Team while driving a silver Toyota Yaris laden with incriminating evidence. Those arrested include Inspector Ojo Oloruntobi, alongside his civilian accomplices—Charles Onah, Joseph Ohis, and Enoma Agho—who allegedly teamed up with the officer to terrorise residents through extortion and harassment.

Describing the incident as “shameful and criminal,” the Command vowed that the disgraced officer and his accomplices will face the full weight of the law. CP Agbonika stressed that the Force has zero tolerance for corruption and warned that rogue officers will be flushed out without hesitation.

“The message is clear,” the statement read. “Any policeman caught in misconduct, extortion, brutality, or corruption will not only lose his uniform but also face prosecution.”

The Command urged members of the public—especially the victim whose ordeal sparked the arrests—to come forward with evidence to strengthen the case.
