Senator Neda Imasuen, representing Edo South senatorial district and serving as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, has expressed his approval of the Supreme Court’s ruling that nullified the Court of Appeal’s earlier judgment affirming Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP).
The Supreme Court’s decision, handed down by a five-member panel in a unanimous judgment on Friday, concluded that the Court of Appeal had no jurisdiction to rule on the leadership of the LP, as the essence of the case related to party governance.
At a press conference held in Benin City on the same day, Senator Imasuen welcomed the judgment, underlining the significant discord within the Labour Party during Abure’s tenure. “There have been many unfortunate developments within the Labour Party,” he stated. “It became a personal issue rather than focusing on the party’s interests. The result has been a decimated membership, and we now have to consider where we go from here.”
Imasuen questioned whether the Supreme Court’s verdict would revive the party, reflecting on the troubling loss of members and the overall morale within the ranks of the LP: “Will this judgment bring them back? I do not know. Will it energise those who are there now? Again, I do not know.”
Alongside his political commentary, Senator Imasuen took the opportunity to shed light on his two-year representation in the Senate, marking a tenure characterised by numerous developmental initiatives aimed at improving the livelihoods of his constituents. He noted that while the primary role of lawmakers includes lawmaking, constituents often gauge their effectiveness by tangible projects such as the construction of roads and provision of basic amenities: “We must do better to ensure that our actions reflect the responsibilities endowed upon us by the electorate.”
The Senator has introduced significant legislation, including a bill aimed at establishing a Federal College of Education in Abudu, Edo State, to address the dire need for qualified teachers, and an amendment to the Federal Medical Centres Act to enhance healthcare efficiency nationwide.
Senator Imasuen has been proactive in resolving public grievances as well, successfully settling nine petitions from Nigerians, asserting his commitment to justice and accountability. His legislative initiatives span education, healthcare, and community empowerment, ensuring impactful outreach across all demographics in Edo South.
His education initiatives include scholarships for 420 higher education students from Edo South, full coverage scholarships for secondary school students, and assistance in JAMB registrations—a clear demonstration of his investment in the future of his constituents.
Furthermore, the senator has implemented training and empowerment programs for youths and women, deploying significant resources for capacity-building and providing tools for sustainable livelihoods.
Senator Imasuen’s efforts also extend to infrastructure development, with ongoing construction of key roads and provision of solar street lights aimed at improving safety and energy sustainability across the senatorial district.
On the healthcare front, the Senator has facilitated medical outreach programmes, supported training for traditional birth attendants, and distributed essential medical supplies, all designed to enhance access to quality healthcare for residents of Edo South.
In a further display of his dedication to community welfare, Senator Imasuen has targeted food security through the annual distribution of thousands of bags of rice to constituents, particularly focusing on vulnerable populations such as widows and internally displaced persons.
Promoting cultural heritage remains a priority for Senator Imasuen as well, as he sponsors performances that celebrate the rich history of the Great Benin Kingdom while also empowering the girl-child through educational initiatives focused on supporting female students.
Senator Imasuen called on the media to amplify the messages of development and progress achieved under his representation, pledging to persist in his advocacy for the people of Edo South.
As the Labour Party faces challenges in the wake of the Supreme Court ruling, many will be watching closely how the party adapts to these changes and whether it can effectively galvanise its base while rebuilding.
