The Edo State Government has announced the recovery of three vehicles and palliatives intended for public distribution, following the inauguration of a special committee tasked with retrieving missing government assets.
Mr. Kelly Okungbowa, Chairman of the Recovery Committee, disclosed this during a press briefing in Benin on Friday, revealing that over 200 official vehicles are unaccounted for.
Within 24 hours of commencing operations, the committee recovered a Hilux van and two Toyota Hiace buses, alongside bags of garri and rice hidden in one of the vehicles.
“These palliatives were meant for the people of Edo State, but they were found in a private residence along with the vehicles,” Okungbowa stated.
“This discovery underscores the importance of our task, and we are determined to retrieve all stolen government assets.”
The chairman commended the role of public information in achieving the early success of the committee and encouraged citizens to provide more leads. He assured whistle-blowers of attractive rewards for verified information that aids the recovery process.
“This is public property and belongs to the citizens of Edo State. It is unacceptable for private individuals to retain what is meant for public use,” he emphasised.
Okungbowa called on former government officials and other individuals in possession of government vehicles to return them within 48 hours to avoid legal consequences.
The committee’s swift action, coupled with its appeal for public cooperation, has ignited optimism that all missing vehicles will be recovered soon. Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration has reiterated its commitment to ensuring accountability and safeguarding public resources.
