In a statement by the Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Osa Nehikhare, the Edo State Government has strongly condemned the acts of violence and destruction allegedly orchestrated by thugs in connivance with the former Deputy Governor of the State, Philip Shaibu. The government asserts that these actions were carried out under the pretext of enforcing a judgement purportedly reinstating Shaibu to his former position.
The State Government reported that Shaibu led a group of thugs through the Airport Road axis of Benin City, attacking innocent citizens and causing mayhem among those engaged in their lawful activities. In response, the government issued a stern warning to Shaibu to cease his violent actions, emphasizing that he is not above the law and will be held accountable for the destruction caused by him and his associates.
The statement highlighted Shaibu’s history of violent behavior, noting that he has been cautioned multiple times by respected societal figures, including the revered Benin Monarch, to refrain from such conduct. Despite these warnings, Shaibu has continued to resort to violence, a tendency that the government says will not be tolerated.
The government reiterated that a stay of execution of the judgement reinstating Shaibu has been filed, rendering any purported enforcement actions illegitimate. It assured the public that the state will use all available means to restore and maintain law and order in the face of this undue provocation.
Citizens are encouraged to remain calm and continue their lawful activities, as the government is committed to ensuring their safety and upholding the rule of law.
