The Edo State government, through its Ministry of Mining and Energy, has launched a comprehensive training session for residents and field workers as part of the Edo State Mass Metering Programme, a significant step towards improving energy accessibility and transparency,
The training, held on Monday, aimed to equip householders interested in obtaining meters and the technicians responsible for installing them with the necessary skills and knowledge.
The facilitator of the training session, Mr. Omon Iluobe, highlighted the importance of the initiative, stating, “As you know, the Edo State Mass Metering Programme was flagged off last Tuesday. To ensure a smooth implementation, we thought it wise to organize a training session for customers who are interested in registering for meters and for the field workers who will eventually handle the installations.”
Mr. Iluobe emphasized the need for thorough preparation to meet the programme’s objectives. “We want to ensure that everyone involved is properly trained to deliver on the mandate. The training is open to all members of the public who need a meter. Attending the training allows us to guide participants through the registration process.”
He also outlined the advantages of the Edo Mass Metering Programme, explaining that it simplifies the often complicated process of obtaining a meter.
“In contrast to other metering programmes, where customers may have to pay upfront or navigate a complex system, the Edo Mass Metering Programme offers a streamlined, free process. We have a single contractor managing the project for now, making it easier for residents to access meters.”
Drawing from previous experience in implementing similar programmes in major cities like Lagos and Ibadan, Mr. Iluobe assured attendees that the project would be effectively executed in Edo State.
“We are not new to this business. We have successfully implemented similar programmes in large cities, and we have the relevant experience to ensure the successful delivery of this project.”
Addressing residents who have yet to take advantage of the programme, Mr. Iluobe urged them to prioritize energy management.
“Energy is a necessity, and having a meter in your home means you are accountable and better able to manage your energy consumption. It also offers flexibility, allowing you to control when and how much energy you use. Metering provides transparency, improving the experience for both the utility and the customer.”
The Edo State Mass Metering Programme is a key component of the State’s broader energy reform efforts, aimed at improving access to electricity and enhancing the efficiency of energy consumption across the State.
