The Edo State House of Assembly has recently set up its Standing Committees. During the inauguration ceremony on Monday, Hon. Charity Iguodala Aiguobarueghian, the Majority Leader, and Member for Ovia North East Constituency 1, was appointed as Chairman of the Rules, Business, and Government House Committee by Speaker Rt. Hon. Blessing Sheriff Agbebaku.
The appointment was mainly to fill the void created by the suspension of three members, and the Speaker emphasized that the newly appointed chairmen need to assume their responsibilities immediately. In addition to Hon. Aiguobarueghian’s appointment, the Selection Committee, chaired by the Speaker, and the Tender Committee, chaired by Deputy Speaker, Hon. Omozele Maria Edekor were also inaugurated.
During the plenary session, the House gave a second reading to the Bill for a Law to Establish Edo State Community Security Network Governance Law 2024, aimed at addressing the high level of insecurity in the state. The Bill received overwhelming support from members who cited cases of insecurity as a major concern, and Hon. Aiguobarueghian, who moved the motion for the bill, emphasized that the legislation would empower the State Security Network, provide a legal framework, and strengthen security personnel to work effectively.
Other members, including the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Omozele Edekor, Hon. Osadolor Uzamere, Hon. Akokhia Ganiyu, Hon. Ugabi Kingsley, and Hon. Eric Okaka, supported the Bill, citing the critical need for a state security network to curtail crimes and criminalities in communities.
The House also condoled families who have lost loved ones due to insecurity challenges and referred the Bill to the House Standing Committee on Safety and Security for further review, with a report due in two weeks. The plenary session was adjourned to Tuesday, 14th, 2024.
