The Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has responded swiftly to a fire that damaged a classroom block at Okaro Primary School in Urhonigbe, Benin City, over the weekend.
Barrister Mrs. Onomen Goodness Briggs, Executive Chairman of SUBEB, confirmed the fire incident in a statement issued to Uptown Press NG, revealing that the cause of the blaze remains undetermined at this stage.
While the fire caused significant damage, it fortunately occurred outside of school hours, ensuring that no pupils or staff were present at the time and no injuries have been reported.
In light of the incident, Mrs. Briggs has promptly deployed a high-level fact-finding team to assess the extent of the damage. This delegation, led by Mrs. Angela Okpanem, Board Member for Edo South, also includes Mr. Austin Otas, Director in Charge of Schools, and other senior officials from SUBEB. The team will conduct a thorough evaluation on-site to determine the necessary steps for recovery.
The Executive Chairman assured the public that plans are already in motion to minimise disruption to the students’ education. Alternative arrangements will be made, and SUBEB will notify parents and guardians of any updates as soon as they are finalised.
Mrs. Briggs expressed gratitude for the support and concern shown by the local community and pledged that efforts to restore normalcy at Okaro Primary School would be prioritised.
