Engr. Prof. Segun Kevin Otoikhian, a Chemical Engineering Professor at Edo State University Uzairue, has urged Nigeria’s indigenous automobile manufacturers and first-time investors to take inspiration from countries like Indonesia, Brazil, and the USA, whose economies have incorporated biodiesel technology.
He made this call while delivering the 14th inaugural lecture series, titled “Green Diesel For A Green Future,” at the university’s Aliko Dangote Auditorium.
The professor believes that by adopting biodiesel technology, Nigeria will be able to restore its reputation as the leading African country while setting a precedent for others to follow.
He also noted that biodiesel is a flexible and environmentally friendly fuel source that has several advantages over fossil fuels. Among alternative fuels, biodiesel has gained more attention due to its feedstock and catalysts’ flexibility.
Prof. Otoikhian also revealed that the wasted-edible oil obtained from restaurants is considered a highly promising raw material for the biodiesel production process.
He emphasized the importance of biodiesel production as a viable alternative to traditional fuel because it is non-toxic, environmentally friendly and has lower emissions of carbon and sulfur.
In his contributions, the professor highlighted the importance of bioethanol, which is the most widely used biofuel worldwide, as it can partially replace fossil fuels, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and is compatible with current engines.
He also stated that Edo State University Uzairue remains committed to fostering academic excellence and has consistently embraced technology-driven educational resources for teaching, learning, and evaluation.
Engr. Prof. Emmanuel Aluyor, the Vice Chancellor of the university, commended the faculty of highly qualified and dedicated staff for their commitment to delivering quality education.
