The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has intensified its scrutiny of former Edo State governor Godwin Obaseki, placing him on its watch list and initiating a detailed investigation into financial transactions during his administration.
The probe reportedly focuses on contracts awarded during Obaseki’s eight-year tenure, which concluded on November 12. This comes amid concerns over alleged financial irregularities and withdrawals from the State’s treasury.
Just days before leaving office, Obaseki alleged that the EFCC had plans to arrest him immediately after the expiration of his tenure. However, he publicly expressed readiness to cooperate with investigators, insisting he had no reason to fear a probe.
Governor Monday Okpebholo, Obaseki’s successor, has bolstered the scrutiny by establishing a 14-member State Assets Verification Committee to audit the activities of the immediate past administration.
The EFCC’s focus on Obaseki follows the earlier arrest of five Edo State officials, including Julius Anelu, the Accountant General, on November 2. The officials were detained over alleged massive withdrawals from the state treasury within a short period.
While the EFCC has yet to directly link Obaseki to any misconduct, investigations are on-going. Attempts to reach EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale for comments have been unsuccessful, as calls and messages remain unanswered.
The situation has generated significant attention, with analysts highlighting the need for transparency and accountability in governance. The findings of the EFCC probe and the state committee are expected to provide more clarity on the allegations surrounding Obaseki’s tenure.
