The Edo State Police Command has removed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ekpoma in the wake of last weekend’s violent protests that rocked the university town over persistent kidnappings and killings.
In a swift security shake-up, the Commissioner of Police in Edo State, CP Monday Agbonika, approved the deployment of CSP Tomofe Nwabueze as the new Divisional Police Officer of the Ekpoma Division, Esan West Local Government Area. The appointment takes immediate effect.
The decision follows a violent protest by youths and students within the Ekpoma university community, who took to the streets to express anger over what they described as escalating insecurity in the area. The unrest prompted renewed scrutiny of policing arrangements in the division and triggered a broader security assessment by the Command.
CSP Nwabueze replaces Nelson Igbinoba, who has been redeployed as part of the reorganisation of the division. Police authorities said the move is aimed at strengthening operational effectiveness and restoring public confidence in the area.
Confirming the development on Tuesday, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Eno Ikoedem, said the redeployment was part of a wider strategy to reposition the police in Ekpoma.
“The Edo State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that as part of ongoing security assessment and strategic repositioning in Ekpoma, the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika, fdc, has ordered the reorganisation of the Ekpoma Division and approved the posting of CSP Tomofe Nwabueze to assume office as the new DPO with immediate effect,” the statement said.
The Police Command reiterated its commitment to tackling criminality in Ekpoma and surrounding communities, assuring residents and students that enhanced security measures are being implemented to address kidnapping and other violent crimes.
