The Edo State Sports Commission, under the leadership of its Executive Chairman, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, is quietly but steadily reshaping the future of sports in the state. Working in line with Governor Monday Okpebholo’s development agenda, the Commission has rolled out a clear, ambitious and action-driven roadmap that is already shifting Edo’s sporting landscape.
From his first day in office, Hon. Enabulele made it clear that real progress starts with structure. He moved swiftly to overhaul the state’s sports associations, tightening administration, improving internal processes, and setting measurable performance standards. The result is a more coordinated, transparent and responsive sports system that speeds up decision-making and improves athlete management.
A key pillar of the new roadmap is the periodic performance assessment introduced for both coaches and athletes. This data-driven review checks technical ability, tactical sharpness, discipline and physical condition. It helps the Commission identify standout performers, determine who needs more support, and ensure the state fields only teams that are fully prepared. It’s a shift from old habits to a modern culture built on professionalism and merit.
At the club level, Hon. Enabulele has pushed through governance reforms touching Bendel Insurance FC, Edo Queens FC and other state-owned sports institutions. These reforms tighten financial responsibility, enforce discipline, strengthen youth development and position the clubs for long-term competitiveness.
Grassroots sports—Edo’s traditional talent well—have also received a major boost. Community tournaments, school sports, neighborhood football contests, the Benin Unity Cup and other age-grade events now run more frequently with stronger backing. A refreshed scouting network ensures that emerging talents are spotted early and guided into proper development pathways.
The Commission has equally embraced fast-growing modern sports. Its bold move into esports has already delivered global acclaim, following Bolade Bezi’s Guinness World Record that placed Edo on the international esports stage. This new direction widens opportunities for the state’s youths, linking sports with technology, education and global exposure.
Beyond football, Hon. Enabulele has broadened state support to less-spotlighted sports such as cricket, taekwondo, rugby, karate, squash, handball, basketball, swimming and athletics. The aim is simple: keep more young people active throughout the year and give everyone a fair route to shine in the sport that best matches their talent.
One of the Commission’s standout innovations is Edo’s new year-round sporting calendar—the most structured in recent years. It provides predictable timelines for state leagues, training camps, grassroots festivals, inter-professional contests, invitational events and talent evaluations. This ensures athletes stay active, teams remain prepared and Edo maintains strong presence at regional, national and international competitions.
Hon. Enabulele maintains that the reforms are not about short-term wins but long-term transformation. “We are building the future of Edo sports with intention, structure and a strong belief in the capacity of our athletes,” he said. “This roadmap is a commitment—to excellence, to accountability, and to the dreams of young men and women across the state.”
With strengthened structures, deeper partnerships and a leadership that insists on accountability, the Edo State Sports Commission is charting a new path—one that repositions the state as a sporting force. From grassroots to elite competition, traditional sports to emerging disciplines, the Enabulele-led Commission is laying the groundwork for a vibrant and globally competitive sports ecosystem that will outlast today and shape tomorrow.
