Nigeria’s football community is in mourning following the death of former Super Eagles goalkeeper and national icon, Peter Rufai, who passed away at the age of 61.
Rufai, affectionately known as “Dodo Mayana,” was a cornerstone of Nigeria’s golden generation, famously guarding the posts during the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumph and the country’s debut appearance at the FIFA World Cup that same year.
The Nigeria Football Federation and the Super Eagles paid tribute to the late shot-stopper in a heartfelt message posted on Thursday via their official X (formerly Twitter) handle.
“Forever in our hearts, Dodo Mayana. We mourn the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, a giant of Nigerian football and a 1994 AFCON champion,” the statement read.
Rufai, whose career spanned over a decade in both domestic and international football, was widely revered for his composure, agility, and leadership between the sticks. His contributions, the statement continued, extended beyond his on-pitch exploits.
“Your legacy lives on between the sticks and beyond. Rest well, Peter Rufai,” the post concluded.
Rufai earned over 60 caps for Nigeria and was part of a squad that not only brought continental glory but also ushered in a new era of global recognition for Nigerian football. Beyond his playing days, he remained active in football development and youth empowerment.
His passing marks the end of an era for Nigerian football fans, many of whom grew up idolising his performances on the international stage.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
