The Enugu State Government has expressed outrage and condemnation following a violent attack in which a man, Sunday Onyeahanachi Echegi, severed his wife’s hand during a dispute in the Ibagwa Ani area of Nsukka Local Government. The brutal assault has been described as a horrifying example of gender-based violence.
According to reports, the violent altercation took place when the couple had a disagreement, leading to the man cutting off his wife, Mrs. Chinonso Echegi’s hand. The victim was rushed to Keoetochukwu Hospital in Nsukka before being transferred to Enugu State Teaching Hospital for further treatment.
The suspect, Sunday Onyeahanachi Echegi, fled the scene but has since been apprehended by the authorities. In a statement, the Enugu State Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Ngozi Enih, condemned the attack as “barbaric” and vowed that the full force of the law would be brought to bear on the perpetrator
Ms. Enih, who visited Mrs. Echegi in the hospital, emphasised that the incident highlights the pressing need to eliminate gender-based violence in the state. “This brutal attack is not only a personal tragedy for Mrs. Echegi, but a stark reminder that violence against women must end now. The Enugu State Government is taking immediate action to ensure that the perpetrator is held accountable,” she said.
Ms. Enih further stated that her office, in collaboration with other relevant agencies, is working to provide all necessary support to Mrs. Echegi as she continues her recovery. She stressed that the Enugu State Government will not tolerate any form of violence against women and girls.
“Gender-based violence is an issue that affects us all,” Ms. Enih said. “It shatters families, destroys lives, and undermines the progress of our society. We must all join forces to raise awareness and take action to protect women.”
The Commissioner also warned those contemplating similar acts of violence, stating that Enugu State has zero tolerance for such behaviour. “We will not hesitate to bring justice to those who perpetrate violence against women,” she asserted.
The state government has called on community leaders, organisations, and individuals to unite in the fight against gender-based violence, ensuring that women can live without fear and fully enjoy their rights and dignity.
“Together, we can build a safer, more just society,” Ms. Enih concluded.
