Europe-Based Man Shot Dead in Benin City Over ₦15m Necklace

A Europe-based Nigerian, Derrick Choice, also known as “Denco”, was shot dead in Benin City, Edo State, on Saturday after armed men attacked him and snatched his gold necklace valued at ₦15 million.

The incident happened at Igun Street, a busy area known for automobile spare parts and repair shops.

Eyewitnesses said the assailants confronted Derrick, who had only just returned from abroad and celebrated his birthday the previous day, and demanded that he hand over the necklace. When he resisted and questioned their intentions, one of the attackers reportedly pulled out a pump-action shotgun and shot him twice in the legs before fleeing with the jewellery.

Sympathisers rushed the victim to hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.

CSP Moses Yamu, spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, confirmed the killing. He described it as “very unfortunate” and assured that an investigation had commenced to track down the culprits.

The incident has heightened concerns over violent robberies in Benin City, with residents expressing shock at the brazenness of the attack in broad daylight.
