Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, fondly known as Dodo Mayana, was on Friday laid to rest at the Ikoyi Cemetery, Lagos, in an emotional ceremony attended by family, friends, and admirers.
Born to a Bonny mother, Rufai began his journey as a budding talent at the Craft Development Centre in Port Harcourt, where he was known as Peter Jaja. His dazzling reflexes and fearless presence in goal soon marked him out as one to watch, paving the way for a glittering career that saw him become Nigeria’s number one shot-stopper.
Rufai rose to national stardom as the Super Eagles’ dependable goalkeeper, representing Nigeria at major tournaments and earning a reputation as one of Africa’s finest between the posts.
The football icon was laid to rest beside his father, in a burial that drew tributes from across the football community. Friends and well-wishers hailed his legacy as a sportsman who inspired generations of Nigerian youths with his dedication and exploits on the pitch.
