A routine farming activity turned fatal on Sunday, 9th March 2025, in Bogije village, Ijebu Igbo, Ogun State, when a farmer, Abdullahi Rasaki, was crushed to death by a falling palm tree.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its spokesperson, CSP Omolola Odutola. According to the report, the tragedy was brought to the attention of the Ijebu Igbo Divisional Police Officer around 9:30 p.m. by a local resident, Gbamila Sunday.
The 40-year-old victim had accompanied his colleague, Waheed Abbass, to the Egbe Semi Jeje area of Oke Sopen, Ijebu Igbo, to cut palm trees when one of the trees unexpectedly collapsed on him. Eyewitnesses said Rasaki cried out for help, prompting residents nearby to rush to his aid. They managed to lift the tree off him and swiftly transported him to the General Hospital in Sagamu for urgent medical attention.
Sadly, upon arrival at the hospital, a doctor pronounced him dead, suspecting that the weight of the tree had caused severe injuries. His remains have been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary for autopsy and further preservation.
The Divisional Crime Branch (DCB) has launched an investigation to establish the full details of the incident. Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Command extended its condolences to the bereaved family and urged farmers and tree fellers to observe safety measures to prevent such unfortunate accidents in the future.
