The Delta State Police Command has apprehended four individuals accused of defrauding a man of N1.7 million under the pretense of offering spiritual assistance to secure a better future.
The suspects, who posed as prophets, were part of a syndicate that specializes in exploiting unsuspecting members of the public.
According to a statement shared on X by the State police spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, the victim was initially approached by the suspects with claims that they had seen a bright future ahead of him.
They convinced the man that he needed their spiritual intervention to realize his potential, which led to a series of manipulative actions.
The suspects persuaded the victim to travel with them to Osun State, insisting that he needed to bathe in the Osun River’s waters as part of a ritual to ensure his future success. During this time, they managed to swindle N1.7 million from the victim, who believed he was investing in his prosperity.
When the victim began to suspect foul play, he reported the matter to the police. The authorities acted swiftly, leading to the arrest of the four suspects. Upon interrogation, the suspects admitted to defrauding several other individuals using similar tactics.
SP Edafe highlighted the incident as a reminder to the public to remain vigilant and wary of individuals or groups claiming to offer spiritual solutions in exchange for money. The suspects are currently in police custody, and investigations are ongoing.
The Delta State Police Command reassured the public that they remain committed to protecting citizens from fraudulent activities and urged anyone who may have been a victim of similar schemes to come forward.
