The Federal Government has allocated N4.8 billion for the procurement of HIV treatment packs, reaffirming its commitment to supporting Nigerians living with HIV/AIDS.
The approval was granted during the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Monday, with the funding set to facilitate the acquisition of 150,000 treatment packs over a four-month period.
Speaking after the meeting, Minister of Health and Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, emphasised that the initiative aims to ensure continued access to essential medication for those affected by the virus.
To enhance sustainability, the FEC has also established a committee comprising representatives from the ministries of finance, budget, defence, and environment, along with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF). The committee will be responsible for developing a long-term funding strategy for HIV treatment and care.
Ali Pate further acknowledged the longstanding support of the American government in Nigeria’s HIV response over the past two decades. He noted that the nation is now shifting towards strengthening its health sector through domestic financing and national health systems.
