The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially incorporated the Chinese language, Mandarin, into the national curriculum for senior secondary schools, marking a significant step in enhancing educational and cultural ties with China.
The announcement was made by Dr. Danlami Hayyo, Secretary of Education for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), during the inauguration of the 14th Chinese Corner at Government Secondary School, Tudun Wada, Abuja, on September 16, 2025. This development follows a comprehensive review of the Basic and Senior Secondary Education Curriculum by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), with implementation set to commence in the 2025/2026 academic session.
Mandarin will be offered as an optional foreign language alongside French and Arabic, aiming to equip students with skills for global competitiveness in commerce, education, and diplomacy.
