In a major stride towards enhancing digital security and service delivery, the Federal Government has rolled out a new identity verification platform, NINAuth, developed by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
The initiative, approved by the government and announced on Tuesday, introduces a safer, more private method of confirming citizens’ identities using their National Identification Number (NIN). It is now the designated channel for all identity verification involving the NIN across federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies.
NIMC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, described the platform as a transformative step for digital governance. “NINAuth empowers individuals to have greater control over their personal information,” he said, noting that users’ consent is required before data can be accessed for services such as Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures.
Accessible through websites, mobile applications, or system integration via API, NINAuth is designed to streamline access to critical services, including SIM registration, passport applications, driver’s licence renewals, and banking transactions.
Adegoke emphasised the system’s commitment to data privacy and protection. “By restricting unauthorised use and ensuring transparency in identity verification, we are reinforcing trust in government systems,” he said.
The launch forms part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at modernising Nigeria’s public sector and improving digital infrastructure nationwide. A standout feature of the new platform is its “single sign-on” capability, enabling citizens to securely access multiple government and private sector services with a single login.
The service also supports real-time identity verification, helping organisations remain compliant with national regulations while delivering faster and more reliable user experiences.
