Panic gripped residents and traders on Wednesday as fire engulfed the famous Oba Market at King’s Square, popularly known as Ring Road, in the heart of Benin City.

Thick smoke billowed into the sky as emergency responders and volunteers battled desperately to contain the inferno, which reportedly started in late hours of the day. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, but eyewitnesses said it spread rapidly through the densely packed stalls filled with textiles, provisions, and household items.

The historic market, one of the busiest commercial hubs in Edo State, has suffered similar fire incidents in the past, sparking renewed calls for a thorough investigation into the recurring disasters.

One distraught trader, who gave her name as Osas, said, “We are tired of these constant fires. Every few years, we lose everything, and nobody ever tells us what caused it.”

Residents and business owners have urged the State government and relevant agencies to probe the root causes of the recurring outbreaks and enforce stronger safety measures to prevent future tragedies.

As of press time, fire service personnel were still working to extinguish the flames, while security operatives cordoned off parts of the market to control the crowd and protect property from looters.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the extent of damage or possible casualties.
