The Federal Government has released the full list of subjects under Nigeria’s newly introduced national school curriculum, set to take effect from September 2025.
The comprehensive subject outline, shared on Wednesday by the Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, introduces far-reaching reforms aimed at preparing Nigerian students for a digital-driven future.
At the Junior Secondary School (JSS) level, pupils will now take Digital Literacy and Coding as a compulsory subject, covering Word, Excel, PowerPoint, internet research, robotics, and even beginner-friendly Python programming. Basic entrepreneurship has also been woven into Social Studies, alongside a stronger emphasis on Nigerian and African history.
For Senior Secondary School (SSS) students, the curriculum goes further, with Programming, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Robotics, and Cybersecurity now featured as core learning areas under “Technology and Innovation”. Students will also undertake research projects, public speaking, and even modules in journalism and fact-checking under English & Communication.
Languages have been expanded to include options in French, Arabic, and Chinese, while mother tongue instruction remains a central feature. The arts retain a strong footing, with music, theatre, and film production offered as part of Creative Arts & Innovation.
Olusegun, who posted the unsigned outline on his X handle, wrote: “The new curriculum for Nigerian schools, which will commence from the next session in September 2025, has been released.”
The Federal Government first unveiled the curriculum on Sunday and is widely seen as a major step to equip Nigerian students with 21st-century skills while maintaining a balance in core sciences, social studies, and cultural education.
