Salihu Mohammed Lukman, the former National Vice Chairman (North-West) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has announced his resignation from the party.
Lukman made this announcement in a statement released on Wednesday. He has been a vocal critic of the APC’s current leadership, accusing it of deviating from the party’s founding vision and ignoring calls for reform.
He stated, “Remaining in the APC is only feasible if President Asiwaju Tinubu allows internal reforms to restore the party’s founding vision, which currently seems very unlikely. My membership in the party has become futile, and there is no point in continuing.”
Discussing his future plans, Lukman said, “I have decided to return to grassroots activism, working with dedicated Nigerians to campaign for the survival and growth of democracy in Nigeria. Our goal is to strengthen democracy to ensure that elected representatives are accountable to their parties and that political parties and governments can reflect the broader interests of Nigerians.”
He expressed confidence in the possibility of achieving a robust democracy with functional political parties in Nigeria. “I believe we can produce governments capable of significantly improving the lives of Nigerians within our lifetime,” Lukman added.
Lukman acknowledged that his decision might not be well-received by party leaders but remained hopeful for eventual unity among those committed to advancing democracy in Nigeria. “I don’t expect party leaders to agree with my decision, but I believe that in time, we will unite with all party leaders and other Nigerians dedicated to developing our democracy,” he concluded.
