Former Minister of Health, Social Development, and Labour of St. Maarten, Pamela Gordon-Carty, has extended her humanitarian efforts to Africa, empowering one hundred widows with a cash donation exceeding one million naira during her visit to Benin City, Edo State, on Friday.
The initiative aligns with Gordon-Carty’s longstanding commitment to supporting the less privileged, particularly widows, in Nigeria and across Africa. She emphasised that her philanthropic mission was inspired by the exceptional work of Prophetess Evangelist Anne Okodugha of the Wealthy Dwelling Place of the Most High Foundation, an organisation dedicated to assisting vulnerable individuals.
Speaking during the empowerment event, Gordon-Carty explained that she was drawn to Nigeria after witnessing the humanitarian efforts of Prophetess Evangelist Anne on social media. Her work resonated deeply with Gordon-Carty, who has been actively involved in similar initiatives in St. Maarten, including donations to public schools and support for vulnerable groups.
“I am here to meet the evangelist in charge of the Wealthy Dwelling Place of the Most High Foundation, to support her mission of helping vulnerable people. Her work through social media caught my attention because it aligns with my passion for assisting those who have been forgotten by society and neglected by the government,” she stated.
She also highlighted her desire to shift the global narrative surrounding Africa, which she believes is often portrayed in a negative light. “Africa is always linked to poverty and suffering, but we must change that perception. I am committed to doing my part in bringing the truth to the world,” she added.
Gordon-Carty further expressed her dedication to social justice and the fight against inequality. “I do not tolerate injustice or the abuse of people. My character as a humanitarian drives me to take action where I can. The little contributions we make can amplify the voices of those who are not heard.”
For Gordon-Carty, visiting Africa had always been a dream, and she finally found the right reason to make the trip. She expressed her intention to maintain a lasting connection with the continent, supporting those in need and working towards a brighter future for its people.
“I have always wanted to come to Africa and was looking for a reason to do so. Now, I have found a purpose that allows me to stay connected—not just as someone offering aid, but as someone who identifies with the struggles and aspirations of its people,” she affirmed.
She called on others with the means to contribute to humanitarian causes, emphasising that helping those in need should be a collective effort.
Prophetess Evangelist Anne Okodugha, the founder of the Wealthy Dwelling Place of the Most High Foundation, expressed gratitude for Gordon-Carty’s visit and generous contribution. She attributed the empowerment programme to divine intervention, stating that her dedication to humanitarian work has been a lifelong mission.
“Humanitarian work is a gift from God. I have been doing this for over 18 to 20 years, and by His grace, I will continue. When things become tough, I remind myself that God is the author and finisher of my faith. He has been my supporter throughout this journey,” she said.
Addressing her focus on widows, Prophetess Okodugha recounted personal experiences that shaped her dedication. “Widows are among the most neglected people in society. I saw the struggles my mother faced as a widow, and I understand the hardships they endure. That is why I am committed to supporting them,” she explained.
During the event, Pastor David Iriah delivered a homily titled “Hear the Voice of the Widow”, referencing 2 Kings 4:1-7 and Exodus 22:22. He emphasised the importance of community and government support for widows, urging authorities to implement structured programmes that address their needs.
“Widows have lost their breadwinners and require assistance to sustain themselves and their families. It is a moral and social responsibility to support them,” he stated.
Among the widows who received financial support was Mrs. Marise Ogieva, who expressed profound gratitude to Gordon-Carty for her generosity.
“It has been ten years since I lost my husband, and raising my child alone has been challenging. This financial empowerment is a great blessing, and I pray that God continues to bless and favour Madam Pamela,” she said.
Similarly, Mrs. Rose Osaroso thanked Prophetess Evangelist Anne Okodugha for her evangelical work and for facilitating the financial assistance that has provided relief to many widows.
