Tinubu Allies on Edge as Cabinet Shake-Up Looms
Fresh details have emerged surrounding the dramatic resignation of Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje as National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), painting a picture far removed from the official health-related excuse previously given.
Multiple insider accounts now suggest that Ganduje’s exit was not voluntary, but rather a direct consequence of high-level discontent within the party, triggered by the recent APC North-East Convention and broader internal wrangling over the 2027 presidential ticket.
The convention, which ended in controversy, reportedly collapsed after key northern leaders declined to endorse Vice President Kashim Shettima as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s running mate for the next general election. The North-West bloc’s rejection of Shettima, insiders say, sent ripples of shock through the party’s top hierarchy and prompted urgent intervention from the President himself.
According to highly placed sources within the APC, President Tinubu was “visibly angered” by the outcome of the gathering and responded by ordering Ganduje to “step down immediately” from his position as party chairman.
The development has effectively ended speculation that Ganduje, a former Governor of Kano State, could be in line to replace Shettima as Vice Presidential candidate ahead of 2027—a possibility some party members had floated in recent months.
More significantly, Ganduje’s ouster may be the beginning of a wider purge within the ruling party. Sources hinted at a looming cabinet reshuffle, with some ministers and senior appointees believed to be connected to the convention fallout now at risk of losing their positions.
“The President is not taking any chances. Those who were involved in embarrassing the party and frustrating unity efforts at the convention will be held accountable,” one top official said under condition of anonymity.
In a swift move to stabilise the party leadership, the APC on Friday announced the appointment of Ali Bukar Dalori, the Deputy National Chairman (North), as Acting National Chairman. His position remains interim, pending ratification by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), which is expected to convene soon to formally fill the leadership vacuum.
APC spokesperson, Felix Morka, confirmed the transition in a statement issued Friday, saying Dalori would assume the position in an acting capacity until the NEC meets.
As the dust settles, attention now turns to the Presidency and whether the expected cabinet reshuffle will follow through on the threats already being murmured within party circles. For many in the APC, Ganduje’s fall may just be the first domino in a series of political realignments ahead of 2027.
