The Edo State Police Command has arrested 37 suspects in connection with alleged cases of sexual and domestic abuse across the State.
Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, disclosed this on Saturday during a press briefing in Benin City while presenting an update on the Command’s achievements from August 2025 to date.
Agbonika said the arrests were part of ongoing efforts to combat gender-based violence under the Command’s renewed operational strategy, which emphasises intelligence-led policing, proactive crime prevention, and community-driven partnerships.
> “We have intensified our focus on protecting women and children from abuse. Thirty-seven suspects involved in sexual and domestic violence have been investigated and are being prosecuted,” he said.
He added that the Police had launched several initiatives under its Community Safety Partnership and Informal Policing Initiative, designed to foster trust, collaboration, and information sharing between law enforcement and residents.
The Commissioner also highlighted other notable achievements, including the arrest of seven suspected kidnappers, seven armed robbers, and two murder suspects, as well as the rescue of 48 kidnapped victims. Recovered items included eight firearms, 56 live ammunition, nine vehicles, 18 motorcycles, and several mobile phones.
Agbonika further disclosed that police operations had disrupted major cult initiation ceremonies in Benin, Auchi, and Ekpoma, leading to the arrest of 38 suspected cultists and a drastic reduction in cult-related killings in Benin City.
Commending residents for their cooperation, the CP assured that the Command remains committed to professionalism and transparency in ensuring a safer Edo State.
> “These achievements could not have been possible without the continued support of the good people of Edo State. Together, we will make our state safer for all,” he said.
