What began as an act of honesty has reportedly ended in deportation for a Nigerian man after he handed in a wallet containing about €4,500 to police in a European country, only to have his immigration status discovered in the process.
According to accounts circulating online, the man found the wallet on the ground last week and, acting on what witnesses described as good Samaritan instincts, took it to a nearby police station. The wallet was said to contain a national identity card and a large sum of cash, estimated at €4,500.
Police officers reportedly commended the man for his honesty and documented the incident as part of standard procedure. However, during routine checks, officers asked him to provide identification and residency documents.
It was at this point, the account said, that the situation took a dramatic turn. The man was unable to produce valid documents and was found to be residing in the country illegally. He was subsequently arrested and later deported.
The incident has sparked debate on social media, with many expressing sympathy for the man and questioning the outcome, while others argued that law enforcement officials merely applied existing immigration laws.
