Good leadership, a panacea to diversity and inclusion in Nigeria’s varsities administration

A former Acting Registrar, University of Benin, Lady Celerina Mercy Ojomo has emphasised the need for good leadership in achieving diversity and inclusion in Nigeria’s ivory towers.
Lady Ojomo who is currently the Executive Director, Independent Television and Radio and member Governing Council of Igbinedion University, Okada spoke on Saturday at the eight Founders’ Day Lecture of the Edo State University Uzairue, themed: “A clarion call for Diversity and Inclusion in University Administration”.
She noted that leadership goes beyond management and enhancing diversity and inclusion is essential in having a good academic environment.

She revealed that with good leadership, diversity and inclusion can be achieved in every institution in Nigeria.
The keynote speaker and Vice-chancellor, Federal University of lokoja, Prof. Olayemi Durotimi Akinwumi talked briefly on inclusivity, exclusivity, marginalization.
According to him, ethnicity and political patronage are among the limitation in diversity and inclusion in the Nigeria university administration.
The pro-chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council of the university, Emeritus professor T.O.K Audu in his remarks said that, the “Founders’ Day is a moment to remind ourselves about the vision. It is a time to celebrate those who had the vision to sow a seed of knowledge that benefits others.”
He went further by saying that in the last eight years, the institution has made a lot of giant strides which include; Introduction of new courses in the faculty of engineering, science, Art and communication amongst others, completion of students’ entrepreneur eatery building to complement their recreational centre, construction of additional male and female hostels for suitable accomodations for students, expansion of postgraduate school, construction of table water company for the university, transformation and elevation of the central hospital in Auchi to a full fledged teaching hospital.
On his part, the Vice-chancellor, Prof E.O.Aluyor in his welcome address appreciated the management of the university and highlighted the various notable achievements the university has witnessed over the years.
He recounted how it began with two faculties and eight programmes, but now has nine faculties offering over thirty undergraduate programs.
The University has earned applause from various regulatory bodies including the National University Commission (NUC) and Times Higher Education Impact Ranking.
He added that, the Edo State University, Uzairue was honoured as the 10th best University in Nigeria, 2nd best State university in Nigeria, and the best University in the south-south geopolitical zone by the National University Commission.
