A Nasarawa State High Court has ordered the detention of Timilehin Ajayi, a prominent gospel singer, following his arrest in connection with the brutal murder of Salome Adaidu, a member of the National Youth Service Corps. Ajayi, who is facing charges of murder, was remanded in prison, awaiting his formal arraignment.
The arrest was confirmed in a statement released by the Nasarawa State Police Command on Friday. The statement revealed that Ajayi was charged and subsequently remanded in custody after the discovery of Adaidu’s severed head.
The chain of events leading to the arrest unfolded when Caleb Umaru, the Bible Study Teacher and General Secretary of the church Ajayi attends, reported that a church member had seen Ajayi acting suspiciously near a river. According to the witness, Ajayi was observed discarding a bag into the river, which, upon investigation, was found to contain the decapitated head of Adaidu.
Ajayi reportedly confessed to the crime, stating that he murdered Adaidu after learning of her alleged infidelity. However, relatives of the deceased have disputed his account, insisting that Adaidu was never in a romantic relationship with the singer.
They further claim that Adaidu was kidnapped and not involved with Ajayi, contrary to earlier reports suggesting she had been visiting him at the time of her death.
