Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo has convened a high-level stakeholders’ meeting in Iyamho, Etsako West Local Government of the State, bringing together key political, traditional, and religious figures from across Edo North.
The meeting, held behind closed doors on Monday, saw the Governor meet with a broad coalition of leaders and security heads to deliberate on tailored strategies to restore and maintain peace in the region.
Present at the forum were notable figures such as former Governor and current Senator representing Edo North, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole; Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku; Minister for Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh; as well as former deputy governors, senior government officials, and prominent religious and traditional rulers.
Governor Okpebholo, addressing journalists after the session, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to rooting out criminality. “We had a very fruitful discussion. Criminal elements will find no refuge here. Under my watch, Edo will be inhospitable to lawlessness,” he declared.
Emphasising a collaborative approach, the Governor highlighted the critical role of community engagement in achieving sustainable security. “Political, religious, and traditional leaders have all pledged their support. We are united in ensuring that Edo becomes a safe haven once again,” he said.
Comrade Oshiomhole praised the Governor’s hands-on approach, noting the significance of the meeting. “This is the first time a sitting Governor has engaged Edo North leaders in such a comprehensive security dialogue. It’s a game changer,” he remarked.
Oshiomhole also commended the provision of patrol vehicles and motorbikes to bolster local security operations, adding that the community had been encouraged to play an active role by reporting intelligence directly to government channels.
Echoing similar sentiments, Bishop Gabriel Dunia of the Catholic Diocese of Auchi urged ongoing cooperation among community members, leaders, and law enforcement. “The voices of our people were heard today. If we walk this path together, we will see lasting peace in Edo,” the bishop stated.
Traditional rulers also voiced strong backing for the initiative. His Royal Highness Mallam Ali Suleiman described the meeting as a “watershed moment,” signalling renewed confidence among community leaders. “The Governor’s direct involvement shows true leadership. We are committed to working hand-in-hand with security agencies,” he said.
The meeting comes amidst growing concerns about security in parts of Edo North, and analysts suggest that this inclusive and consultative approach may set a precedent for how regional crises are addressed in the future.
Governor Okpebholo assured residents that the outcomes of the meeting would translate into tangible actions in the days ahead. “This is just the beginning. The people of Edo should expect a safer, more secure state,” he promised.
