Gov Okpebholo Unveils New Management and Players for Bendel Insurance, Edo Queens

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has reiterated his commitment to the revitalisation of Bendel Insurance and Edo Queens Football Clubs, as he officially unveiled the clubs’ new management teams and players.

The ceremony, held at the Government House in Benin City on Tuesday, was led by the Governor’s Deputy, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa.

In his remarks, Hon. Idahosa emphasised the Edo State Government’s determination to restore the football clubs to their former glory. He outlined the critical role sports plays in promoting unity, economic development, and societal cohesion, and stated that the administration is fully committed to taking the clubs to greater heights.

“It is with immense pleasure that I welcome you to this historic occasion,” Hon. Idahosa said. “Today’s unveiling marks a significant step in our vision to elevate Bendel Insurance FC and Edo Queens FC to national and international prominence. These appointments and the addition of new players are part of our broader strategy to revitalise these clubs and build a strong foundation for the future of football in Edo State.”

The Deputy Governor also urged the newly appointed management and players to uphold discipline, teamwork, and professionalism in order to achieve success. He highlighted the importance of collective effort in driving both Bendel Insurance and Edo Queens to excellence, noting that the team must focus on surpassing the limits of the Premier League and maintaining a strong presence in continental football competitions.

“I am proud to announce that Edo Queens, as defending champions of the Nigeria Women Football League, have firmly established Edo State as the hub of sports in Nigeria,” Idahosa added. “This administration is immensely proud of their stellar performance, both in domestic and continental competitions.”

The Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Desmond Enabulele, who also spoke at the event, expressed gratitude to the Governor for his unwavering support, which he credited for the success of Edo Queens at the recently concluded CAF Women’s Championship. He noted that the strategic decisions made by the Commission, including the appointment of the new management and the recruitment of fresh talent, would ensure sustained success and increased glory for the clubs

Enabulele further assured the government and the people of Edo State that the newly assembled team is committed to bringing home both national and international victories, promising a more competitive and entertaining brand of football.

During the event, the new management for Bendel Insurance FC was introduced, with Austin Iyamu named as Technical Director, Peter Obanor as Team Manager, and Greg Ikhenoba appointed as the club’s Head Coach. Additionally, 13 new players were unveiled for Edo Queens FC, strengthening the team ahead of the 2025 season.

Edo Queens FC, who are currently the defending champions of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL), will kick off their 2025 season on Wednesday, 15th January 2025, at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, where they will face Abia Angels FC.
