Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has called on 493 newly-recruited constables from Edo and Delta States to embody the values of integrity, professionalism, and community protection as they embark on their policing careers. Speaking at the passing-out parade for the 2022 intake of the Nigeria Police Force, Governor Okpebholo urged the recruits to use their training to serve with honour, build trust, and combat corruption.
The ceremony, which took place at the Police Training School in Ogida, Benin City, marked the culmination of their training, preparing them for duty in their respective states. The Governor congratulated the recruits for their commitment and perseverance throughout the training programme.
“Today marks a significant achievement for these young men and women, who are now ready to serve and make a positive impact in our communities,” Governor Okpebholo said in his address. “You know your people, your culture, and your environment. Let that knowledge guide you in safeguarding our communities and fostering strong, trustworthy relationships.”
Emphasising the importance of professionalism, Governor Okpebholo reminded the recruits that the role of a police constable goes beyond enforcing the law—it involves doing so with fairness, kindness, and respect for the people they serve. “Policing is about doing what is right. Be honest, be professional, and say no to corruption. Work closely with your communities to prevent crime and build relationships. These values are what will make Nigeria safer for everyone.”
In a strong message of support, Governor Okpebholo assured the recruits that the Edo State Government would provide the necessary resources to help them succeed. “You have a noble duty to protect lives and property. The people of Edo and Delta States, as well as the entire nation, are counting on you,” he said.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, represented by the Assistant Inspector-General for Zone 5, Arungwa Nwazue Udochukwu, highlighted the importance of this recruitment as part of a broader effort to strengthen the Nigerian Police Force. With the recruitment of 30,000 new officers nationwide, the initiative is designed to address security challenges and enhance law enforcement across the country.
Meanwhile, the Commandant of the Police Training School, ACP Aigbe Aghaghowa, detailed the composition of the new recruits: 181 females and 312 males, with 228 recruits from Edo State and 265 from Delta State. The passing-out parade also saw the presentation of awards to outstanding recruits, recognising their dedication and excellence throughout the training process.
Governor Okpebholo presented the award for best overall recruit to Imoh Patience Udoka, a native of Igbanke, Edo State. Other notable awardees included Okechukwu Victoria, who excelled in professional studies, and Aigbe Amadi Favour, who received an award for best performance in legal studies.
The ceremony concluded with a strong call to action for the recruits to uphold the ideals of service, professionalism, and commitment as they begin their careers in law enforcement.
