Fubara has ordered an immediate audit of the financial records of the 23 local government councils in Rivers State.
This directive came shortly after the swearing-in of Caretaker Committee Chairmen for these councils in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.
Emphasizing the importance of transparency, Fubara stressed the need for a comprehensive audit report within one month. He tasked the Auditor-General to conduct a thorough examination of the councils’ finances over the past three years to ensure accountability.
The governor highlighted the significance of understanding how public funds were managed at the local government level and emphasized the need for responsible financial management by the new leadership. He also urged the new chairmen to prioritize the delivery of democracy dividends and settle outstanding financial obligations, including salaries owed to outgoing officials.
Furthermore, Fubara assured that the tenure of the caretaker committees would be short-lived, with plans in motion to swiftly conduct elections for the local government councils.
