…Commits to Fair Pay and Workers’ Welfare
In a move aimed at strengthening Edo State’s workforce and improving livelihoods, Governor Monday Okpebholo has employed 360 citizens across the three senatorial districts into the state’s civil service. The new recruits have been deployed to various ministries and parastatals, marking a significant step towards bolstering public service delivery.
Dr Anthony Okungbowa, Edo State Head of Service (HOS), disclosed this development during a media briefing in Benin City. He highlighted the administration’s commitment to people-focused governance, contrasting it with the practices of the previous government, which relied on consultants and contractors for employment.
“The previous administration outsourced cleaning and other services to consultants, whose workers earned between N20,000 and N30,000 per month, with no job security. Governor Okpebholo was dissatisfied with this arrangement and directed a shift to direct employment. This ensures that workers are paid the N70,000 minimum wage and enjoy greater job stability,” Okungbowa explained.
The Head of Service revealed that the 360 new employees now hold civil service appointments, with letters issued to formalise their positions. The initiative, he added, was not a one-off event, as more employment opportunities are expected in the near future to meet the staffing needs of government offices.
“This is just the beginning,” Okungbowa said. “The government plans to hire additional staff to ensure that all ministries and parastatals have adequate support. The focus is on creating meaningful employment and delivering practical, people-centred governance.”
The initiative has been widely praised for prioritising the welfare of Edo citizens. By eliminating middlemen, the State government has ensured that public funds directly benefit workers while fostering a sense of security and belonging among employees.
On behalf of the state’s civil servants, Okungbowa expressed gratitude to Governor Okpebholo for his efforts to improve workers’ lives and for championing fair pay and sustainable employment practices.
“This initiative underscores the governor’s dedication to good governance and enhancing the quality of life for Edo people,” he concluded.
