The Concerned People of Benin Nation (CPBN), a prominent pressure group, has accused Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, of crossing “Benin red lines” by allegedly showing “sacrilegious disrespect” to the Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, and the revered Benin throne.
The group has issued a seven-day ultimatum for the governor to issue a public apology.
In a press conference held on Tuesday cristened “This Affliction Against Benin People Must End,” the CPBN demanded that Governor Obaseki tender an unreserved, written public apology to the Benin monarch.
The group insisted that this apology should be published in at least three national newspapers and called for the immediate withdrawal of lawsuits allegedly filed by suspended Enigie (Benin Dukes) against the Oba of Benin.
The CPBN’s demands were articulated in a press statement read by Prof. Amen Uhunmwangho, who signed it alongside other members of the group, including Dr. Jacob Abusomwan, Barr. Osarenkhoe, Leftist Agho Omobude, Mr. Iyamu Osaro Culture, Comrade Eseosa Omoregbee, and Chief Omuemu Etinosa.
The group further called for an immediate halt to the ongoing construction of a museum intended to house repatriated Benin artefacts. They argue that the project, which is being carried out by the state government, does not have the approval of the Oba of Benin.
In addition to these demands, the CPBN urged the reallocation of lands and properties whose Certificates of Occupancy were recently revoked by Governor Obaseki. These revocations have reportedly affected prominent individuals, including Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu and the late Captain Hosa Okunbor.
The group insisted on the return of communal lands that it claims were illegally acquired by the state government.
They also called for the payment of salaries and allowances to 14 Edo State House of Assembly members who have been unconstitutionally denied their seats for the past four years.
As the deadline looms, the pressure on Governor Obaseki to respond to these demands is mounting.
