Unknown gunmen reportedly launched an attack on the family residence of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan in the early hours of Tuesday, prompting swift security responses and raising fresh concerns over political safety in Kogi State.
The incident took place around 1:00 a.m. at the Senator’s family home located in the Obeiba-Ihima area of Okehi Local Government Area, in the central region of the state.
According to security reports shared on Thursday by Zagazola Makama, a well-known counter-insurgency expert specialising in the Lake Chad region, the attack was carried out by at least three armed individuals. The assailants reportedly vandalised the building, shattering window panes and causing visible structural damage.
Makama, who disclosed the details via his X (formerly Twitter) account, cited intelligence sources close to the matter. He stated that the Chief Security Officer to Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, Mr Yakubu Ovanja, officially reported the attack to the appropriate security authorities.
“Following a distress alert, a team of security operatives from Okehi Division swiftly mobilised to the scene,” the post read. “While no casualties were reported and no arrests have been made, the premises were documented and preliminary investigations have commenced.”
Police sources have confirmed the incident, though the motive behind the attack remains unclear. Investigations are currently ongoing, with authorities working to determine whether the incident was politically motivated or criminal in nature.
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents the Kogi Central Senatorial District, has yet to issue an official statement regarding the attack. The Senator, a prominent and sometimes controversial figure in Kogi State politics, has been a vocal advocate on issues of governance and transparency, which has at times drawn both praise and opposition.
Local residents expressed concern over the breach of security, particularly given the Senator’s high-profile status and the timing of the attack. “It is shocking that such a thing could happen under the cover of darkness with no immediate trace of the attackers,” said one resident who asked to remain anonymous.
