Outgoing Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, on the eve of handing over office, extended a final gesture of clemency by pardoning 10 inmates serving short-term sentences across correctional centres in the State.
The pardoned individuals, identified as Igwe Kelechukwu, Esazobor Ohioze, Gift Osaretun, Takyi Rockson, Dikuar Friday, Ossai Glory, Augustine Sunday, Daulagha Ebifagha Godluck, James Paul, and Anas Isah, had less than a year remaining on their sentences.
This decision was part of Obaseki’s prerogative of mercy, aimed at offering a fresh start to individuals who have demonstrated good conduct and rehabilitation.
This development was made public through a statement issued by Crusoe Osagie, the Special Adviser on Media to the Governor. Obaseki’s action highlights his commitment to reform in the correctional system, emphasising rehabilitation over punishment.
Governor Obaseki formally concluded his tenure on Monday and is set to transfer power to his successor, Monday Okpebholo, in a ceremony scheduled for Tuesday (Today).
