A suspected internet fraudster, known only as Benji, was hacked to death by two suspected cultists after he failed to remit a staggering N5 million believed to be the proceeds of an online scam. The chilling murder took place in the early hours of Sunday, February 2, 2025, in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State.
Sources claim that Benji, who is said to have been involved in the illicit world of “yahoo” fraud (internet scams), was ambushed by the two men, who were infuriated by his refusal to pay up. The violent assailants allegedly tortured Benji, demanding that he transfer N500,000 to them as a token of repayment. However, despite complying, they insisted that the amount was insufficient, and the attack escalated.
In a horrifying turn of events, the suspects are said to have forcefully extracted Benji’s One Time Password (OTP) from his phone, before continuing their savage assault. The gang then emptied his bank account, transferring the entire N5 million into their own coffers.
As the beating continued, Benji succumbed to the violence. In a final grotesque act, the cultists dismembered his body and stuffed it into a sack, before dumping it outside his residence in Ekoirinim, a community in Calabar’s Municipal Local Government area.
The gruesome discovery was made by Benji’s grandmother, who had become suspicious when she noticed a bag being dropped near the house. Desperately, she raised the alarm, but it was too late – the perpetrators had already fled, leaving behind only the horrifying evidence of their crime.
According to an insider close to the investigation, the tragedy was triggered by a deadly mix of betrayal and greed. “The deceased had just received a N5 million deposit into his account, the proceeds of a successful scam. However, he was deeply in debt, owing one of the attackers, Aziz, N300,000. Word of his newfound wealth spread quickly, and the cultists, eager for revenge and their share of the spoils, lured Benji to a meeting place where they carried out their gruesome attack,” the source revealed.
While the attack has sent shockwaves through the community, there is no official confirmation from local authorities. SP Irene Ugbo, spokesperson for the Cross River State Police Command, told The Guardian that no formal report had been made to the police. “We had a briefing this morning, and such a report was not raised,” she stated, leaving many questions unanswered.
