Former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar has clinched the ticket of his party, the People’s Democratic Party to contest election into the office of the President in the 2023 elections.
The victory which can best be described as a repeat of the Port Harcourt convention saw Atiku Abubakar polling 371 votes to defeat his closest rival Governor of Rivers State Ezenwo Nyesom Wike who scored 237 votes.
Supporters of the former Vice President could not hold back their joy when it became apparent Atiku was in the lead during vote counting as they chorus “Atiku is coming.”
Sokoto State Governor Rt.Hon Aminu Waziri Tambuwal had withdrawn from the race and thrown his weight behind Atiku Abubakar before the start of the exercise.
In his acceptance speech the Wazirin Adamawa Atiku Abubakar commended the resolve of PDP Governors, the National Working Committee, delegates and PDP family for their commitment to ensure the success of the convention describing it as another free, fair and credible process conducted by the party.
“The successful conduct of the convention is another milestone in the process to consolidate on our political gains” he said.
He promised to restore unity and give the people a sense of belonging in a country sharply divided by differences created by the ruling All Progressives Congress Government.
The former Vice President also describes his victory as an opportunity to reverse this missing link.
Atiku Abubakar advised aggrieved persons to resolve their differences amicably instead of rushing to the courts, noting that the PDP has an internal mechanism of resolving disputes, urging them to take advantage of the window.
The 2023 elections will be the 6th time Atiku Abubakar will be contesting for the exalted office of President of Nigeria.
