An incident at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife Zoological Park has left the community in shock. According to reports, a nine-year-old lion attacked and k!lled one of the zoo’s staff members, Olabode Olawuyi. Mr. Olawuyi, who had been working as a Veterinary Technologist at the zoo for over a decade, was in charge of the Zoological garden and had been taking care of the lions since they were born on campus about 9 years ago.
The attack occurred while Olawuyi was feeding the animals, and despite the efforts of other members of staff who were present, the lion had already caused severe fatalities. The University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon BAMIRE, was informed and expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased.
In response to the incident, the aggressive lion has been euthanized, and a comprehensive investigation has commenced to identify the remote causes of the attack. The University management has also sent a delegation to the widow and children of the deceased, imploring them to take solace in God who gives life and also has the power to take life.
