The Campaign for Ethics and Good Governance in Benin City has made a public plea to President Bola Tinubu, urging him not to channel the promised palliative fertilizers for Edo State through Governor Godwin Obaseki.
This appeal follows President Tinubu’s recent national broadcast, which was praised for its timely intervention to halt ongoing protests and address the nation’s critical issues.
In their statement, the group expressed gratitude towards President Tinubu for his fatherly approach in promising additional palliatives nationwide. However, they firmly advised against routing the fertilizers through Governor Obaseki, citing past issues with the distribution of palliatives.
Comrade Lucky Efe, the group’s spokesman, criticized the previous distribution of palliatives such as rice, alleging that they were unevenly distributed and hijacked by the ruling party in the state. Efe stated, “Edo people are not happy with the way the governor of the state and his party have handled the palliatives such as rice.”
Efe further claimed that the rice sent to Edo State was allocated to PDP leaders, who then allegedly locked it up and re-bagged it for sale. He highlighted that recent protests had exposed these alleged misdeeds, with hungry citizens attacking the hidden stockpiles of rice. “The protests in the past few days have exposed the criminal acts of the PDP under the leadership of the governors as most of the hideouts of the rice were attacked by hungry citizens,” Efe noted.
He accused Governor Obaseki of misleading the public by claiming the rice was distributed through Christian leaders when, in reality, it was given to political leaders for re-bagging and sale. “The governor had embarked on a propaganda that the rice from the federal government was being channeled through Christian leaders whereas they were actually given to political leaders of their party for re-bagging and onward sale to the public,” Efe said.
The group has urged President Tinubu to consider alternative distribution channels for the fertilizers, emphasizing that the people of Edo State have lost confidence in the state government and the PDP. They also extended their thanks to President Tinubu for addressing the nation’s youth and urging them to be patient with the government’s new economic policies.
“We want to use this opportunity to appeal to President Tinubu to send the fertilizers through other channels because the people have lost confidence in the state government and the PDP,” Efe stated. “We join the President to appeal to the youths to sheath their swords and give the federal government time to implement the economic policies that have been laid out, which we believe will soon begin to yield positive results.”
In their statement, the group also condemned the tribalization of protests in Nigeria, recalling the ethnic tensions during the #EndSARS protests of 2020 and advocating for unity in addressing national issues.
