The #EndBadGovernance protests, which have sparked widespread demonstrations across Nigeria, have reached the residence of former Governor Nyesom Wike in Port Harcourt.
Wike, who currently serves as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister, had previously voiced strong opposition to the protests taking place in the Nigerian capital.
While the protests appear to have waned in the FCT, the movement is gaining momentum in Wike’s home state of Rivers. Demonstrators have now gathered outside the former governor’s mansion in the state capital as the protests enter their sixth day.
In response to the growing unrest, the Nigerian Police Force has deployed additional personnel to the area to maintain order and ensure the safety of all parties involved. The increased police presence aims to prevent any potential escalation and safeguard both the protesters and the local community.
The protests initially began with demonstrators storming the Government House on the first day, where they publicly embarrassed Governor Sim Fubara. The governor faced backlash after attempting to offer the protesters money for ‘pure water,’ a gesture perceived as patronizing and dismissive of their demands for substantive change.
The #EndBadGovernance movement has been fueled by widespread dissatisfaction with government corruption, poor governance, and lack of accountability.
