Apostle Johnson Suleman, General Overseer of Omega Fire Ministries International, has stirred nationwide controversy following a provocative statement suggesting that criticising him in Auchi, Edo State, could lead to death.
The remark, which was captured in a viral video circulating on social media since Friday, appeared to boast of the unwavering loyalty of his church members. In the clip, Apostle Suleman is heard saying, “If you want to die and you’ve been praying for death, but it hasn’t come, there’s a way to make it happen.”. He then adds that speaking against him in Auchi could result in fatal consequences.
While it remains unclear whether the statement was made in jest or as a serious warning, the comment has drawn strong condemnation from members of the public and civil society groups, who view it as reckless and potentially inciting violence.
Critics argue that religious leaders should promote peace and tolerance, not fear or intimidation. “It is highly irresponsible for any spiritual figure to imply that dissent can lead to death,” said a spokesperson for the Human Rights League.
Apostle Suleman, who has been a polarising figure in Nigeria’s religious landscape, is no stranger to public attention and has often courted controversy with his fiery rhetoric and unfiltered sermons.
At the time of writing, the cleric has not issued any clarification or retraction regarding his comments.
Authorities have yet to respond officially to the video, but calls are growing for the security agencies and religious oversight bodies to investigate the implications of such a statement and ensure the safety of worshippers and critics alike.
