A pro-government group, Tinubu-Okpebholo-Nigeria, has issued a stern warning to veteran rapper, Eedris Abdulkareem, cautioning against what it described as attempts to incite unrest in Benin City and other parts of Edo State.
The group said while freedom of expression is a constitutional right, it does not extend to promoting violence, disorder, or spreading misinformation capable of destabilising society.
In a strongly worded statement signed by its National Coordinator, Precious M. Topa and made available to Uptown Press, the group was reacting to viral footage from a performance held on April 3, where the “Jaga Jaga” crooner allegedly made derogatory remarks about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his son, Seyi Tinubu.
According to the group, the artiste allegedly described the President as “the biggest fraud” and claimed Nigerians began committing suicide under the current administration—assertions it dismissed as false, inflammatory, and misleading.
The controversy reportedly prompted the Edo State Government to seal off Mega Hub, the venue of the performance, a move the group applauded as a decisive step to prevent potential unrest.
Commending Governor Monday Okpebholo for the action, the group said it sends a clear message that Edo State will not serve as a breeding ground for disorder or unlawful conduct.
Drawing global parallels, the group referenced the case of Kanye West, who was barred from entering the United Kingdom over controversial remarks, stressing that societies worldwide are increasingly taking firm stands against inflammatory speech.
It warned that attempts to provoke chaos or manipulate public sentiment could endanger lives and undermine national stability, urging citizens to embrace constructive dialogue and lawful engagement.
“Democracy and freedom of speech do not extend to incitement or deliberate misinformation,” the group stated, insisting that responsible expression remains key to Nigeria’s peace and development.
