The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has categorically debunked claims that the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise will resume on 27 May 2025, describing the reports as false, misleading, and unauthorised.
In an official statement issued on Sunday, 4 May, the Commission made it clear that no date has been fixed for the recommencement of the CVR or any related services such as voter transfers or the replacement of lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, warned the public against falling for misinformation currently circulating across various online platforms. “The Independent National Electoral Commission wishes to inform the general public that it has not yet announced any date for the resumption of the Continuous Voter Registration, Transfer and Replacement of lost Permanent Voters’ Cards,” the statement read.
INEC stressed that all official information concerning voter registration and other electoral processes would be disseminated through its verified social media handles and traditional communication channels. It reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and timely updates, urging citizens to await credible announcements.
The electoral body also issued a strong caution to members of the public, urging them to refrain from sharing unverified content. It noted that the anonymous messages suggesting a 27 May resumption date are not only false but also crafted to deliberately mislead and confuse Nigerians.
“Spreading inaccurate information about electoral matters undermines public trust and creates unnecessary tension. We urge all Nigerians to remain vigilant and consult only authorised sources for updates,” the Commission stated.
As Nigeria prepares for its next cycle of elections, INEC reaffirmed its dedication to facilitating a transparent, inclusive, and credible electoral process. It assured the electorate that ample notice and comprehensive guidelines will be provided once a decision is made regarding the resumption of voter registration activities.
The clarification comes amid growing public interest in voter registration as political parties and civil society groups ramp up preparations for the upcoming polls. INEC has reiterated that it will not be pressured by unofficial sources and will uphold its responsibility to inform the public accurately and promptly.
