In a spirited effort to boost participation in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Edo State, Professor Anugbum Onuoha, on Saturday led officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on a road walk through major parts of Benin City.
The sensitisation walk, which covered Ramat Park, Ring Road, and New Benin Market, drew the attention of traders, commuters, and young residents, as the commission urged eligible citizens to register and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
Addressing the crowd, Prof. Onuoha emphasised the importance of active civic participation, particularly among young people who have just attained voting age.
“If you fail to register, automatically you fail to vote,” the REC warned. “We urge everyone who has turned 18 or has not yet registered to come out and take part in the CVR. Your vote is your voice, and it will count.”
He noted that the commission was concerned about the low turnout so far and appealed to residents to make use of the registration opportunities available both online and at designated INEC centres across the State.
Prof. Onuoha also reminded the public that the exercise was not limited to new voters, as it also accommodates those wishing to transfer their registration, replace lost or damaged PVCs, or update their personal details.
The sensitisation campaign, he said, forms part of INEC’s broader efforts to ensure that every eligible Edo citizen is captured ahead of the next election cycle.
“Elections begin with registration,” he added. “If we all play our part now, we will build a stronger democracy tomorrow.”
