Amid a fresh wave of violence across parts of Benue State, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oloyede, has temporarily relocated to the state in a decisive move to tackle growing insecurity.
The Army Chief, who arrived in Makurdi on Tuesday, immediately proceeded to the Benue State Government House where he held a closed-door meeting with Governor Hyacinth Alia. The high-level discussions are believed to have centred on the recent spate of attacks allegedly carried out by armed herdsmen, which have left dozens dead and several communities displaced.
Sources close to the meeting suggest that General Oloyede will tour several affected communities in the coming days to assess the extent of destruction and gauge the sentiments of those impacted.
Following the private meeting, Governor Alia briefed both the Benue State Traditional Council and the State Security Council on the Army Chief’s visit. Speaking at the briefing, the governor described the visit as “a message of hope” to the people of Benue in the face of what he called “renewed, unprovoked attacks.”
Governor Alia added that the Chief of Army Staff extended condolences on behalf of the federal government and reaffirmed its commitment to ending the violence and restoring peace to the troubled region.
