Fraudsters peddling worthless car insurance to unsuspecting motorists have been targeted in a dramatic crackdown by a powerful new task force.
In a coordinated sting in the Mabuchi district, officials from the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) and the Nigeria Police Force arrested multiple suspects accused of selling counterfeit third-party motor insurance policies. The raid marks the first major strike by a newly formed enforcement committee following a direct order from the Inspector-General of Police.
The message from regulators was blunt: “Buy a fake policy, and you are buying a world of pain,” a senior NAICOM official stated. He warned that drivers with forged documents are “driving naked,” utterly unprotected and liable for colossal costs if they cause an accident.
“These fakes are not just paper; they are a fraud that leaves accident victims destitute and denies them their rightful compensation,” the official added.
The crackdown leverages tough new powers under the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act 2025. Those convicted face being hit with a crippling fine of up to N200,000 or a one-year jail sentence—or both.
Nigerian motorists are urged to shun roadside sellers and verify any policy immediately via NAICOM’s official verification platforms.
