Benin City – In a heartfelt appeal to widows across Edo State, the wife of the Governor, Doctor Betsy Obaseki, has urged them to leverage existing legal frameworks to safeguard their rights and the welfare of their children and other dependents.
This call was made during a special engagement with widows from the Edo South Senatorial district, held to mark this year’s International Widows’ Day.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Betsy Obaseki emphasized the importance of widows collaborating with the government to ensure the protection and promotion of their rights. She acknowledged the myriad challenges widows face and encouraged them to rise above these difficulties through unity and proactive measures.
“Today, we celebrate your strength and resilience,” Dr. Obaseki stated. “We must work together to ensure that the rights of widows and their children are protected. Utilize the legal frameworks in place to secure your future and that of your dependents.”
The engagement served as an opportunity to highlight the existing support systems and legal provisions designed to assist widows in the state. Dr. Obaseki assured the widows that the government is committed to their welfare and urged them to seek help whenever necessary.
International Widows’ Day, observed annually on June 23, aims to address the poverty and injustice faced by millions of widows and their dependents around the world. This year’s theme focused on empowering widows to reclaim their rights and improve their socio-economic status.
The event in Edo South Senatorial district was attended by numerous widows, who expressed gratitude for the government’s continuous support and the platform to voice their concerns. It also featured discussions on various issues affecting widows and the available legal remedies.
